Over 1,000 Con Edison customers in Bushwick have been without and heat since late Saturday night as temperatures dip into dangerous territory.
FDNY responded to a smoking manhole at 814 Knickerbocker Ave. at around 10:44 p.m. Within minutes NYCEM sent out an alert about the power outage.
Con Edison says the outages are a result of snow and road salt mixing and damaging equipment. It says crews have been working throughout the night to return service to their customers. Con Edison’s website says power was turned off to allow repairs to continue and to avoid any further damage.
Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso said there should be “no excuses” for having no power during a brutal cold snap.
“There’s infrastructure that should be in place that protects against that and if they know that this is an issue, and it’s been an issue in the past, they should have measures to make sure we don’t see it again,” he said.
A warming center is available to those without power at Evergreen Middle School for Urban Exploration on 125 Covert Street. Con Edison says estimated time for power outage restoration in Bushwick is 7 a.m. Monday.
