Nine buildings at the Marcy Houses will not have heat Wednesday night due to a steam link incident, Council Member Chi Osse wrote in a social media post.
NYCHA officials say they responded to a buildup of residue resulting from a steam leak on the exterior wall of 502/504 Marcy Ave.
Officials confirm the residue tested positive for asbestos and say the Department of Environmental Protection has restricted access to the area. NYCHA says they are working on conducting environmental testing and air monitoring.
Sources say the required asbestos notifications have been posted on the impacted building's exterior within the DEP zone.
Residents located near the affected exterior wall have been offered temporary and complimentary hotel stays and gift cards for Uber and meals while their apartments are inspected and cleaned.
It's not clear when residents will be able to go back to their apartments.
A resident informed News 12 that a boiler was spewing steam and hot water for a while. She added that the hot water spewed out of the boiler and was getting on people's cars parked nearby.
News 12 has contacted the Department of Buildings and is waiting to hear back.
