As voters prepare for the upcoming City Council election in New York City’s 47th District — which includes Bay Ridge, Coney Island and Sea Gate — Democratic candidate Kayla Santosuosso is hoping to bring a fresh, yet familiar, face to the City Council.
Santosuosso is no stranger to the area.
“I first came to Bay Ridge when I was an intern in college in 2013 — I think it was to intern at the Arab American Association of New York,” she recalls.
Since then, she’s worked in nonprofit organizations, served as a city attorney, and even co-owned a local bar with her husband — experience she says gives her a unique understanding of the district’s needs.
“My entire orientation is being a public servant — in some way, shape, or form,” she told News 12.
Currently working with District 47’s incumbent Council Member Justin Brannan, Santosuosso says she’s ready to take the reins. Her campaign focuses on affordability, safety and supporting small businesses.
“On the affordability side, we need universal child care,” she says. “And on the livability side, it really is safety — whether we’re talking about pedestrian safety or the state of our sidewalks.”
As a former small business owner, she also wants the city to do more to support local shops — starting with cutting back on punitive fees.
If elected, Santosuosso would make history as the first woman to represent the 47th District.
“I would be happy to be elected into the seat and the fact that I would be the first woman would be a nice bonus," said Santosuosso.
