A 55-year-old man is recovering after police say he was pushed onto the tracks at a Downtown Brooklyn subway station just before midnight.
It happened around 11:35 p.m. on the northbound R train platform at the Jay Street station, according to police. Investigators say the man was shoved off the platform and fell onto the tracks below.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and took him to the hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
Police have not said what led up to the push. It’s also unclear whether the two men knew each other.
The person police say is responsible ran off after the incident. Officers are still searching for him.
Commuters who heard about what happened said it’s unsettling.
“That’s good that he’s OK,” said Charu Stewart. “We still have to watch ourselves. It’s a very different world than we ever had before — basically right now, not even just in New York, but a different world.”
According to NYPD data, there have been five transit crimes reported so far this year in the area covered by the 78th Precinct.
The investigation remains ongoing.
