Amazon is looking to open another facility on Long Island, this time in Massapequa at the Sunrise Mall site.
Sunrise Mall Holdings LLC officials confirmed it is in contract with Amazon at a Nassau County Planning Commission hearing Thursday, saying the company is interested in 26 acres of the land.
It also stated it was unsure how Amazon would use the land.
An Amazon spokesperson tells News 12, “Amazon is exploring options at the former Sunrise Mall site in the Town of Oyster Bay with the intent of opening an operations facility in the future. This process is in the early planning stages and additional steps remain. We'll share more when we can.”
Meanwhile, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino says in a statement, "We welcome Amazon's investment in Massapequa, which brings jobs, tax revenue, and smart reuse of a long-vacant site. This project means economic growth without the strain of a greater population on schools, roads, and services - a real win for our community."
Many people who live near the former mall attended the meeting and were surprised to hear Amazon was an option, voicing their concerns over a 24/7 facility so close to homes.
As for the Sunrise Mall building itself, attorneys stated at the hearing that demolition is not currently scheduled, and it will not take place for some time.
