After more than three years behind closed doors and numerous delays, the historic Carroll Gardens library is preparing to welcome the community back.
For many, the library is more than a place to borrow books — it's a hub for learning, connection and community.
"The library is really the center of the community," Fritzi Bodenheimer, a spokesperson for the Brooklyn Public Library, said. "You can improve your language skills. If you're a kid, you can come to story time. If you're a teen, you can hang out."
First opened in 1904, the Brooklyn landmark has undergone major renovations, including a new rooftop A/C unit, modern lighting, updated computers and repairs to its children's area.
"In many ways the vision was to let this historic beautiful building shine," senior director of Community Relations Michael Fieni said.
The renovation preserves many of the building's original features while adding new spaces for teens and community events.
"We've been trying to help teens discover and advance their interests more broadly," Fieni said.
Books are expected to hit the shelves next month, with the library set to reopen Dec. 1.
