Attorneys representing a 28-year-old man who was shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the Bronx last week are calling for his immediate release from the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Oscar Belgal was shot in the neck on Oct. 8 in the Marble Hill section of the Bronx. His 5-year-old son was in the backseat.
Activists gathered Thursday near West 225th Street and Broadway one week after the shooting to show support for Belgal and call for ICE to leave the city.
“We are New Yorkers and to get to any of us, they're going to have to go through all of us,” one person at the rally said. “This is for Oscar, for every other New Yorker that's been abducted from their homes, their families here in New York in the last two years.”
Belgal’s attorneys say he remains at the Metropolitan Detention Center while awaiting surgery. They say he is experiencing a loss of sensation on the left side of his face and impaired hearing in his left ear.
Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz also criticized the agents' actions.
“I don't want people in my community or in the Bronx or anywhere being endangered by reckless actions of under-trained ICE agents,” Dinowitz said.
Dinowitz said he and other local officials signed a letter that will be sent to businesses asking them not to allow ICE to use their parking lots and garages as staging areas.
