Police are investigating a crash that killed two people Wednesday on I-78 in Newark.
New Jersey State Police say troopers responded to I-78 east at mile marker 56.6 at about 6:27 p.m. for reports of a motor vehicle crash in the local lanes.
According to police, preliminary investigations show that an Isuzu box truck was traveling on the interstate when it veered off the road to the right, hit a concrete barrier, struck a light pole, then flipped over.
"The vehicle then left the roadway and descended from the I-78 overpass into a dirt area," state police said in a statement.
As a result of the crash, the driver, identified as Chad Hill, 35, of Edison, was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger, a 46-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, also sustained fatal injuries. His name is being withheld pending family notification.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
