An 18-year-old woman is expected to recover after police say she was shot during an attempted robbery inside a subway station late Sunday night.

Police say the shooting happened just before midnight on the downtown 2 train platform at the President Street station in Crown Heights.

According to a police source, a man walked up to the woman and tried to steal her purse. The two struggled before, police say, the man pulled out a gun and fired one shot, hitting her in the chest.

Police say the man ran off with the purse, but investigators later recovered it.

The woman was taken to Kings County Hospital by police and is expected to be OK.

Kecha Regis says she was on a train pulling into the station when she heard the gunshot.

"I heard a gunshot, boom. Everybody ducked down... she was hurt, and people on the train were calling police," Regis said.

Regis says she was on her way to visit her brother, who lives nearby, when everything unfolded.

"It was scary," she told News 12.

The gunman has not been arrested.

A police source describes him as wearing baggy black clothing and a red baseball cap with white lettering when he ran from the station.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
