A 16-year-old boy is dead after a shooting inside a NYCHA building in Sheepshead Bay.
Police say officers were called just before 6 p.m. Monday to 2957 Avenue X for a report of a
shooting inside an apartment. Police sources say when officers arrived, they found the teen in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to his chest and not responding.
According to that same source, several teens were in the room at the time. Investigators were told one of them was handling a gun when it went off, hitting the 16-year-old. The source says one of the teens ran out of the apartment right after the shot.
Paramedics rushed the teen to Coney Island Hospital, where he later died, according to police.
Police also recovered a shell casing inside the apartment, according to a source, and are continuing to investigate. Right now, investigators believe the shooting may have been an accidental discharge, the source says.
Authorities also sent out an alert looking for a person who ran from the scene. According to the 911 logs, that person was described as a male wearing a black windbreaker, black pants, blue sneakers and a blue beanie. Investigators believed he may have gotten on a bus near Bedford Avenue shortly after the shooting.
Police have not released the teen’s name as they work to notify his family. Officials also say he did not live at that address.
No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
