Six nonverbal students, ages 6 to 8, spent more than four hours on a school bus before arriving at their Brooklyn school, according to a city investigation.
The children were supposed to arrive at P.S. 289 by 9 a.m. on Dec. 16, 2025, but the bus did not reach the school until about 1:25 p.m. Investigators say the driver went to two wrong schools while school staff did not know where the students were.
Investigators say one girl was found lying on a seat, soaking wet, with her diaper off. One mother used tracking devices in her two children’s backpacks to monitor their whereabouts.
Special Commissioner of Investigation Anastasia Coleman described the fear of watching the bus travel away from where the children were supposed to be.
The investigation found that the driver and matron failed the children and recommended that neither supervise city students again. Both work for Consolidated Bus Transit. Sources close to the investigation tell News 12 both have been suspended.
