The NYPD released body camera footage showing the accidental discharge of an officer's service weapon inside a Brooklyn subway station, an incident that injured two officers and a bystander.
The shooting happened at approximately 4:34 p.m. Sept. 10 inside the Kingston Avenue-Throop Avenue A/C subway station in Crown Heights.
According to police, Officer Sherresse Tyler and her partner, Officer Wahed Newaz, were assigned to a foot post and standing in the mezzanine area of the station when Tyler unintentionally discharged one round from her service firearm.
Investigators said the bullet exited through the bottom of Tyler's holster and struck the ground, causing it to fragment. The resulting bullet fragments or debris injured Tyler in the left shin, Newaz in the left forearm and a civilian passerby in the left ear.
The civilian was taken by ambulance to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, where she was treated and released, authorities say. Both officers were transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County and were also treated and released. The body camera footage shows Tyler and Newaz standing near the bottom of a stairwell when the gun discharges. A woman descending the stairs can be seen reaching toward her head at the moment the shot is fired. The NYPD's Force Investigation Division, in coordination with the prosecutor's office with jurisdiction over the case, is continuing to investigate the incident. Police said additional interviews and forensic testing are underway. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to the First Deputy Commissioner's Use of Force Review Board, which will evaluate the evidence and determine whether the use of force was justified and complied with department guidelines.
