Construction is now underway to build a new CTown in Morris Heights - in the same spot where another one was destroyed in a
February 2023 fire.
At the time of the fire, that CTown was the only supermarket in the area, and neighbors say it left a big void.
The site supervisor for the current project tells News 12 that works was supposed to start in late 2024, but because of delays getting permits, they only just broke ground this past Monday.
Whether or not the neighborhood still needs the CTown is what many people in the area said they were wondering.
In the time since the fire, two new supermarkets have opened just across the street from the CTown.
"I don't think we need another supermarket," said Grace Dukes, who lives nearby. "I think we could probably use another building or maybe a garage."
Dukes said most people just go to the new supermarkets now, and personally, she was not planning to change that when the new CTown opens.
Others thought it could be a good thing.
Wellington German says more options are always a good thing, and it will be "nice to have some competition as well."
The supervisor says construction is expected to take between nine and 12 months.
