10:51 PM: It was only a few weeks ago when power outages and freezing heat pumps left residents throughout Brooklyn without a warm place to live or lights to turn on. The blizzard has revived those concerns.

NYC 311 reminds New Yorkers of Code Blue

7:20 PM: New York City 311 is reminding New Yorkers that Code Blue procedures remain in effect until further notice, urging residents to call 311 if they see a homeless person outside.

MTA provides update on Tuesday morning service

8:30 PM: The MTA provided an update on services for the Tuesday morning commute:
New York City Subway Some express service will continue to run on the local tracks for the morning rush hour, along with modified service in the Rockaways, with shuttle trains running between Euclid Avenue and the Rockaways, serving all stations.
New York City Buses Buses continue to run a winter weather schedule with routes subject to detours and curtailments based on road conditions in local areas. Longer accordion-style buses remain off the road and continue to be replaced with 40-foot standard buses operating with chained wheels. Customers should expect slower travel times and rolling service modifications while efforts to improve road conditions are underway.
Long Island Rail Road Limited service beginning 4 a.m. on the Ronkonkoma, Huntington, Babylon, Oyster Bay, Montauk, and Port Washington branches. Montauk service will be limited to trains between Speonk and points west. Oyster Bay service will operate westbound in the morning and add eastbound after the morning rush. Westbound service will resume in the 4:00 a.m. hour, eastbound service will resume in the 5:00 a.m. hour. The Port Washington and Ronkonkoma branches will run on an hourly schedule, Babylon and Huntington branches will operate on a half-hourly schedule. Port Jefferson Branch trains will run every hour and a half. Oyster Bay Branch trains will run every two hours, with the first westbound train scheduled for 5:26 a.m. The first eastbound train will leave at 10:45 a.m. Service to Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal will run every 20 minutes.
Metro-North Railroad Operating an enhanced Saturday schedule on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines. This modified schedule provides two-thirds of regular weekday service. The Hudson Rail Link connecting bus will resume tomorrow, along with the shuttle buses that have been substituting for the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry.
Bus, train and subway riders are encouraged to check the MTA app or mta.info for the latest service information and updates.

Hundreds of flights delayed, cancelled at New York City airports

5:42 PM: Hundreds of flights are cancelled at Laguardia Airport after today’s blizzard snarled travel across New York City.
Many travelers faced delays, cancellations and long rebooking lines.
Crews worked throughout the day to clear runways and terminals, while airlines scrambled to recover from the storm’s ripple effects.
Travelers are being urged to check flight status before heading to the airport and prepare for lingering disruptions as schedules get back to normal.

NYC public library locations will be open Tuesday

5:42 PM: The Brooklyn Public Library Press Office says that all locations of the Brooklyn Public Library, The New York Public Library and the Queens Public Library will be open Tuesday.
Brooklyn Public Library Central Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. All other branches will open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
New York Public Library (Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island) All locations will be open at noon and are expected to close at their regularly scheduled times.
Queens Public Library Central and Flushing Libraries will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. All other branches will be open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Tree in Park Slope falls during blizzard conditions

5:30 PM: News 12's Julia Burns is in Park Slope checking on fallen trees.
New York City Parks says it received 343 reports of fallen trees across the city as of noon Monday, none with injuries. The department says many of the reports may be duplicates. Forestry crews and inspectors are working 12-hours shifts Monday and Tuesday, due to the extended period of high winds and heavy snow, according to NYC Parks. If you see a downed tree, you are asked to contact 311.

Officials remind drivers to be cautious of black ice

5:04 PM: The National Weather Service is reminding drivers in New York City to be cautious of black ice, especially during the Tuesday morning commute.

Wildlife Conservation Society zoos remain closed Tuesday, Feb. 24

3:38 PM: The Wildlife Conservation Society says its zoos and aquariums will remain closed through tomorrow, following the blizzard.
They say they are expected to reopen Wednesday.

Officials remind residents how to assist snow clearing operations

3:25 PM: New York City Emergency Management reminds New Yorkers how to assist snow clearing operations.
They say that property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks despite DSNY clearing the streets and bike lanes.
Property owners and car owners are urged not to push snow into the street, including bike lanes as it impedes snow clearing operations and is illegal.
They say snow may be pushed against the building, to the curb line, or areas on private property.
NYCEM released the following sidewalk clearing schedule for property owners in a statement:
If the snow stops falling between:
7 AM and 5 PM, property owners must clear sidewalks within 4 hours.
5 PM and 9 PM, property owners must clear sidewalks within 14 hours.
9 PM and 7 AM, property owners must clear sidewalks by 11 AM.

Alternate side parking suspended through Sunday

Mayor Mamdani says alternate side street parking will be suspended through Sunday, March 1.
The regulation just went back into effect Thursday for the first time since the last snow storm.
Drivers will be granted time to dig out their cars a second time.
Parking meters will remain in effect.

Trash collection suspended today and tomorrow

2:48 PM: Mayor Mamdani said during a press conference that trash collection will be suspended for today and tomorrow.
The mayor said there will be an update tomorrow on what trash collection will look like going forward.
Recycling will be delayed until next week.

Emergency snow shovelers needed

2:34 PM: NYC is still looking for temporary workers to help remove snow and ice from public areas. Due to blizzard conditions the current rate has now increased to $30. Overtime workers' rates will increase to $45 per hour.

1:24 PM: New York City schools will be in-person Tuesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
All New York City public schools were closed Monday because of the blizzard.

NYC travel ban lifted

12:20 PM: The ban against non-essential travel was lifted Monday afternoon in New York City.
A state of emergency was declared ahead of the blizzard on Sunday. Only official workers and emergency vehicles were permitted on streets, highways and bridges.
Conditions on the road remain icy. Mayor Zohran Mamdani urges the public to remain indoors if possible.
Those who choose to drive are reminded to travel slowly and be mindful of their surroundings.

Stormy weather downs trees, causes power outages in Brooklyn

10:45 AM: The blizzard knocked down several trees and left many without power Monday in Brooklyn.
Con Ed is working to restore power to thousands of customers across the five boroughs. In Brooklyn, around 300 to 400 customers are affected by the outages.
Residents without power are urged to visit warming centers as the stormy weather continues.

Mamdani visits Department of Sanitation command center in Lower Manhattan

10:05 AM: Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited the Department of Sanitation’s command center Monday in Lower Manhattan.
As the blizzard is in full effect, he says sanitation workers “did a first pass on 99.3% of streets” across New York City.
“More than 500 emergency snow shovelers did a first pass on 1,400 crosswalks. About 400 hydrants and hundreds of bus stops,” he added.
The citywide travel ban is expected to extend to at least noon.
“Many New Yorkers are staying home, and we appreciate that, because these are dangerous conditions,” he said.

9:15 AM: Con Edison responded early Monday morning to downed wires in Dyer Heights.
Citizen video captured a power line shooting out sparks on 13th Avenue.
Con Edison urges the public to stay clear of downed wires and to report them to Con Edison or 911.

4:28 AM: The NYC Ferry will have a delayed start Monday and operate on a weekend schedule.
Service ended early at 5 p.m. Sunday due to the expected blizzard conditions.

Hochul deploys over 100 National Guard members amid storm

Monday 4:00 AM: Gov. Kathy Hochul has deployed over 100 National Guard members and more than 5,600 utility workers to help deal with the impact of the blizzard.
A State of Emergency was declared ahead of the storm and went into effect on Sunday morning.
She also announced that the state is using over 2,000 plows to clear the roads.
Hochul urged residents to avoid traveling Sunday into Monday and encourages people to work from home if possible.

Hundreds of flights canceled at LaGuardia as snow intensifies

5:52 PM: More than 500 flights have been cancelled and nearly 200 more are delayed at Laguardia International Airport this evening as the snowstorm intensifies.
Some rescheduled flights are not departing until Tuesday. Security lines were crowded as travelers rushed to catch remaining departures, while others whose flights were canceled were trying to find alternate ways home.
Flight statuses continue to change throughout the afternoon, and travelers are urged to check with their airlines before heading to the airport.

Canarsie residents stock up on supplies ahead of blizzard

3:19 PM: Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn states, "All elementary schools within the Diocese of Brooklyn will be closed tomorrow, Monday, February 23rd, for an official snow day."
Canarsie residents stock up on supplies ahead of blizzard
Canarsie residents descended on Key Foods on Rockaway Parkway Sunday ahead of the blizzard.
“We got milk, we got cereal we got rice, we got oil, we got canned stuff," said Deon, a Canarsie resident.
Residents across the borough reported long lines at their local markets.
During last month's storm, DoorDash and UberEats suspended delivery service. There has been no word yet if they will do the same for this storm.

Mayor Mamdani declares state of emergency during news conference

3:28PM Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a "state of emergency" for New York City and issued a travel ban from 9 p.m. Sunday night until 12 p.m. Monday afternoon. All non-essential travel is banned from city roadways.
The mayor also announced NYC public schools will be closed on Monday, including no remote learning. This is the first "old school" snow day in years.
"We were given a waiver by the State Department of Education for a snow day," said Kamar Samuels, the city's Chancellor of Schools.
They did not announce a plan for schools on Tuesday.
Mamdani also announced the basement alert group is now active and high-water rescue teams are on standby for flooding emergencies.
Public libraries will be closed on Monday.
The mayor said overdose prevention centers will remain open overnight across the city.
He also noted to expect a delay in trash and recycling collection.

MTA to temporarily suspend LIRR service, effective 1 a.m. Monday

2:32 PM: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced that it will temporarily suspend Long Island Rail Road service beginning at 1 a.m. Monday and resume when weather conditions permit it.
LIRR service will be reduced to hourly on the Port Jefferson and Port Washington branches, and half-hourly on the Babylon Branch, effective Sunday at 7 p.m.
The agency warns that LIRR customers should expect delays and cancelations due to the winter weather.
It also encourages riders to stay informed by visiting mta.info, the MTA app, the TrainTime app, email alerts and by calling 511.
Riders with hearing disabilities are encouraged to dial 711 to reach the MTA at 511.
