Head of NYC's homeless services resigns day before hearing on city's Code Blue operations
The head of New York City's homeless services submitted her letter of resignation a day before a City Council hearing on the city's ongoing Code Blue operations, according to a spokesperson for Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Molly Wasow Park's resignation comes during a long bout of frigid temperatures, leaving the city under a Code Blue for an extended period. A total of 18 New Yorkers have lost their lives outdoors this winter, the mayor said Monday.
Park was appointed commissioner of the New York City Department of Social Services by Mayor Eric Adams in 2023. DSS oversees the Department of Homeless Services and the Human Resources Administration.
"We appreciate Commissioner Park's years of service to the city, and the mayor looks forward to working with her through this transitional period," said Dora Pekec, a senior spokesperson for the mayor.
Park previously held roles as the first deputy commissioner for DHS and the deputy commissioner for Development at the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, according to the city.
"We will be naming a new commissioner in the coming weeks," said Pekec.
