Candles are still flickering outside the Langston Hughes Houses in Brownsville, where 72-year-old Larry Maxwell had lived for more than four decades.
Maxwell was crossing Sutter Avenue near Osborn Street on Saturday evening when a speeding driver struck another vehicle, then hit Maxwell, according to police. The driver drove off before police arrived.
Maxwell died from his injuries at Brookdale Hospital.
His family is now pleading with the public for help identifying the driver.
“They took my father away, I need justice,” said Maxwell’s son, Larnce Vargas.
Loved ones plan to hold a vigil for Maxwell this Friday evening, on what would have been his 73rd birthday.
