Authorities say a Cypress Hills man is facing a murder charge for allegedly carrying out a double shooting that left one man dead and another fighting for his life.
Michael Mendoza Cardona, 24, is accused of killing another Cypress Hills man, Jose Urena Moran, 30, and critically injuring a 50-year-old man during a violent incident that unfolded in their neighborhood.
Gunfire rang out on Sunday just before 6 p.m. outside 2961 Fulton St. and was captured on surveillance video.
The footage shows a man walking up to two other men on the sidewalk after an argument. Within seconds, he pulls out a gun and starts firing several times at close range. Both men are hit and fall to the ground.
As it’s happening, another person can be seen standing nearby, watching.
The person who fired the shots then puts the weapon away and walks off. Moments later, he steps into the street just as a police car is pulling up. People nearby point in the suspect’s direction, trying to get officers’ attention.
Officials say both men were struck multiple times throughout their bodies. EMS rushed them to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where Moran was pronounced dead. The 50-year-old remains in critical condition, according to authorities.
People who live nearby say the video is hard to watch, especially knowing how quickly everything unfolded.
“It’s very sad. I was in the house sleeping and I woke up to the news and I looked and I went, ‘Wait a minute, I was just over here talking to them last week Saturday,’” said Felicia, who has lived in the area for 12 years. “Why are you walking around with a gun... broad daylight, Easter Sunday... it’s crazy out here.”
Police say Cardona faces additional charges, including attempted murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
