A captain and three officers were wounded after a person assaulted multiple uniformed staff members Saturday on Rikers Island, according to the New York City Department of Corrections.

Officials say it happened at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center just before 12:30 p.m.

The captain and officers were injured while attempting to control the situation, according to a DOC spokesperson.

Paramedics rushed the victims to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital.

A source close to the investigation told News 12 that all four staff members were treated and discharged.

DOC Commissioner Stanley Richards released the following statement.

“Our staff perform a difficult and honorable job to keep our city safe. We will never tolerate any act of violence in our jails. We will support our members of service in their recovery and will pursue accountability on their behalf.”

The incident happened more than two months after the city closed a dilapidated medical infirmary, which was a step closer to shutting down the jail known for violence and poor living conditions.

The city is shifting its focus to borough-based prisons. However, the original plan to close Rikers by August 2027 has been delayed because of construction delays of the borough-based prisons.
