Tenants in Bed-Stuy say the locks on the front doors of their Bedford Avenue apartment building have been broken for at least four months – making the four-story complex accessible to anyone.
“This is the worst,” said Ethel Ellerbe, a tenant. “I’m a senior. I’m scared. We can’t have people coming in and out of here. There are small kids in this building, and it’s not safe.”
“I just want to be safe where I pay rent,” said Morris Tapley, another tenant. “[Building management wants] their rent money. I want to be safe.”
Tenants said they had seen trespassers sitting in the stairwell, and one unwanted guest even changed clothing in the hallway, then left dirty clothes on the ground.
“One day I come, I see somebody right here [in the stairwell],” said Tapley.
Tenants told News 12 on Tuesday that they reached out to C+C Apartment Management several times. They also filed multiple 311 complaints.
“Nobody’s doing anything to help with this problem, and this is a serious issue,” said Ellerbe.
A C+C Apartment Management spokesperson released the following statement: “The issue is an access card reader that was found to be inoperable and requires replacement. That repair had been previously scheduled and will be completed today.”
An HPD spokesperson released the following statement: "Every New Yorker deserves a safe place to call home and HPD’s enforcement team takes that responsibility very seriously. HPD is aware of the issues in this building, and we have issued violations to the property owner. We are addressing the conditions through our Emergency Repair Program which allows us to hire contractors to conduct repair work and bill the property owner. Our immediate priority is ensuring that the tenants have a safe place to live."
As of Tuesday night, tenants told News 12 that the issue still had not been fixed.
